You can own the right products and still not get the results you expect — because the order they're applied in changes how well each one actually works. Layering correctly isn't complicated once you understand the underlying logic: thinnest to thickest, treatment before protection.
The correct order, step by step
- 1Cleanse — always first. Removes oil, makeup and buildup so nothing blocks the products that follow. This is why we call it a treatment-prep step, not just a wash.
- 2Exfoliate/renew (2-3x a week, not daily) — lifts dead skin cells so treatment products can penetrate more effectively. Comes after cleansing, before serums.
- 3Treat — your core treatment serum or cream (like MelaClear or Age Defender) goes on clean, freshly-exfoliated skin, where it can actually do its job.
- 4Repair — barrier-supporting oils or serums go after lighter treatments, since oils sit on top and can block thinner products from absorbing if applied too early.
- 5Protect — sunscreen always goes last in the morning routine. Applying it earlier creates a barrier that blocks everything underneath from working properly.
The most common mistake
Applying sunscreen before treatment products (rather than after, as the final step) is one of the most common layering mistakes — it effectively blocks your treatment serums from reaching the skin at all.
Morning vs. evening
Mornings should end with sunscreen — non-negotiable, since UV protection is only effective as the outermost layer. Evenings skip sunscreen entirely and can put more focus on repair-oriented products, since overnight is when skin does most of its natural renewal work.
Simple beats complicated
You don't need ten products to layer correctly — you need the right handful, applied in the right order, consistently. A basic four-step routine (cleanse, treat, repair, protect) done correctly every day outperforms an elaborate ten-step routine applied inconsistently or in the wrong sequence.
