You start a new skincare routine expecting clearer skin, and a week in, it looks worse. Before you assume the product is wrong for you β or panic and stop β it's worth understanding what's actually happening, because the two most likely explanations need completely opposite responses.
What purging actually is
Purging happens when an ingredient β typically an exfoliant or an active that speeds up cell turnover β pushes congestion that was already building up beneath the skin's surface out faster than it would have appeared on its own. It's not new damage; it's existing congestion arriving ahead of schedule.
The key test: location
Purging shows up where you already tend to break out β if you normally get blemishes on your chin and jawline, purging appears there too. It doesn't suddenly create breakouts somewhere you've never had them before. That distinction alone rules out purging in a lot of cases.
What a true negative reaction looks like
- New locations. Breakouts or irritation appearing somewhere you don't normally get them.
- Redness, itching or burning. Purging doesn't typically itch or burn β if it does, that's a sensitivity or allergic reaction, not purging.
- No improvement over time. Purging settles down within weeks as turnover normalizes. A true reaction tends to stay the same or get worse the longer you continue.
- Immediate onset. A reaction often appears within hours to a couple of days of first use; purging usually takes a bit longer to show up as it reflects a changed turnover cycle, not an instant response.
How long purging actually lasts
Most purging resolves within 2β6 weeks as your skin's turnover cycle adjusts to the new routine. If it's been longer than that with no improvement, it's worth reconsidering whether what you're seeing is still purging at all.
What to do either way
If it looks like purging β same locations, no new symptoms, improving slowly β the right move is usually to continue, since stopping and restarting later can reset the adjustment period. If it looks like a true reaction β new locations, itching, burning, getting worse β stop and reach out to us before continuing, rather than pushing through discomfort hoping it's purging.
When in doubt, just ask
